Binghamton Scholars Program

Global Medical Brigades

  • Traveled to Nicaragua for a public health brigade in January 2016

  • Empower rural communities to prevent common illnesses

  • Construct infrastructural projects, such as the installation of latrines, septic tanks and concrete floors

 

Student United Way

  • Collaborate with Sodexo Food Recovery Network to recover leftover food to package for soup kitchens

  • Complete an innovatory list of weights, temperatures, and quantities of food

  • Volunteer at Carlisle After School Program to facilitate physical activities and maintain a safe environment in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood

 

Johnson City Mentor Program

  • Visited Johnson City Middle School and provide assistance to a young, at-risk student

  • Offered guidance and tutoring to a middle school student who struggles at home and academically

  • Completed 50 hours of service at the middle school and attend a seminar once a week

 

Pen Pals

  • Exchange letters with an elementary school student from the local area

  • Appeal to an elementary school student with interesting letters, messages, and drawings

  • Meet the student and give them a tour of the campus

 

St. Rose of Lima Volleyball Assistant Coach  

Brett Harrell (516) 799-6004

  • Teach the fundamental skills of volleyball to teenage girls, ranging from 6th-9th grade

  • Create drills and game strategies through collaboration with coaches to schedule practices 

  • Establish clear guidelines to be followed by all players 

 

Faith Mission Soup Kitchen in Hempstead

  • Prepare and serve food for mass consumption

  • Clean tables and floors, stack the chairs and ensure the establishment is held up to health code standards

  • Monitor clothing room in order to ensure everyone can receive clothes, soap and other necessities

 

Construction in Central America  

Ernest Kabelka (516) 698-8398

  • Travelled to Nicaragua in 2013 and Costa Rica in 2014

  • Communicated with the Spanish-speaking natives

  • Built the foundation of two new classrooms by foraging rebar, mixing cement, and digging trenches

  • Repainted the outside of pots, the building, and tire toys and donated new toys and equipment to the children
